Green Job Training

From our research and discussions, there is not a set career path for the green collar jobs that are being created. This is in part that there is not a universally accepted curriculum. For example, if you are going to be a mathemetician, you will learn algebra, geometry, trigonometry etc that is universally accepted. But what about the "green" businesses?

Green encompasses many different topics. The topics being pushed currently are energy conservation, efficiency and renewables. The question being, is there generally accepted curriculum for these new careers? The answer: NO. Lets be honest here, this is a new frontier. The true experts in these fields will tell you that once they understand, teach, and implement new building science technology - something new comes up. There are always multiple conditions that need to be addressed, such as cost and practicality.

If you are considering a green career, we can recommend you to a few organizations that are leaders in the new green movement- no matter what state you live in. Start with the Building Performance Institute, then couple that with Energy Star. Meanwhile, as our governments are figuring out how to create jobs, you can begin your educational basis and learn the fundementals. Green is not a color but a science, and you will be a pioneer. It is probably going to be much longer, with millions of dollars spent, before a univerally accepted approach to this science is adopted across the world. You however, will be on the cutting edge.

If you are already a building performance professional, then in California all you need is your HERS certification. With these two credentials and education, you are primed to become a Whole-House Home Energy rater. This is a rare designation is you will work hand in hand in rating homes for their energy efficiency. Much like giving a home an Energy Star label like your water heater comes with. Announcing: Green Business Coalition and Green Jobs Creation

The green movement is vast and expanding quickly. In one way or another we can identify a means of going green. For example, fluorescent light bulbs are now cheaper than the incandescent. Cars are going hybrid. A carbon footprint is not something your mother yelled at you about when you tracked dirt into the house.

What about business owners? It still isn't cost efficient to install solar. They're doing all they can to hold on to the basics and ride the recession out into recovery.

Chris Dominguez with CaliforniaHERSrater.org is building a Green Business Coalition. This meeting of the minds is designed to unite professionals, eco-preneurs, individuals, chambers, business owners and more. Topics of discussion will be from establishing a green business, communicating existing successful business ideas, strategic planning, profit models, government contracting and more. Anyone who believes that they have a good idea is welcome to join.

The first meeting is scheduled for the beginning of February 2010 in Southern California. For those who cannot make travel arrangements, a digital conference room is provided free of charge.

The New "Green Job" - California HERS Rater

Lately we have spent alot of time digging into the "new" green jobs initiative that the Obama Administration has been haggling over for nearly a year. Billions of dollars are being spent to create a new green industrial revolution and get people back to work. This money spent is in addition to the existing billions of dollars that have been spent for years in the energy industries for weatherization assistance and low income energy efficiency programs.

What we have found is that California is already a leader in the energy efficiency and energy conservation movement. With the passage of AB32, AB811, the Smart Meter, and the redevelopment of statewide behavioral branding of energy conservation - they have a very valuable career path that has not had the spotlight shown on.

A California HERS Rater has existed for years, and are sanctioned by the CEC. They are trained and regulated by one of three providers in California (CalCerts, Cheers and CBPCA). These guys go out, test homes for energy efficiency and regulate the building industry for integrity.
Starting January 1, 2010 these guys will be in demand because of the energy codes being implemented.
